St Augustine Grass Areas Of Adaptation & Establishment
In the U.S., St. Augustine grass is found from the Carolinas to Florida and westward along the Gulf Coast to Texas and in Southern and Central California. Because of its lack of winter hardiness, St. Augustine grass is restricted to areas with mild winter temperatures. Like bermudagrass, St. Augustine thrives in high temperatures, but the growth of St. Augustine is better than that of bermudagrass in cool, coastal climates.

In areas where
St. Augustine is subject to freeze damage, Floratam will
be later to green up in the spring and is subject to
severe winter kill. Floratam may suffer freeze damage in areas north (cold) and west (dry) of San Antonio. Climate - Adaptive in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9-11.
Floratam is highly tolerant to Brown
Patch and to some chinch bugs. Although the grass has become more susceptible to chinch bugs through the decades, it still holds enough good qualities to remain a top contender for St.
Augustine grass. When it is being established in a new area, it is important to mow the grass every two weeks with a three inch height of cut, and to water it on a regular basis. Floratam is tolerant of atrazine herbicides -- if you must use chemicals -- when temperatures are below 85° F.
