Plant your grass plugs from Seedland in
Spring / Summer - These ARE THE BEST TIMES.
We sell warm season grass plugs - Warm
season grasses grow best when day time temperatures are above 80° F.
Planting of warm season grass plugs should be in spring / early summer to allow for the
longest
period of time with good growing conditions -- above 70 degrees for
warm season grasses. Your plugs need time to grow and
establish a good root system... so plant early for best results.
Ideally you should wait until soil temps are 65° F
degrees or more AND all danger of freeze and or frost is past. A
freeze or frost will turn warm season plugs brown (dormant) and they
will cease growth until sufficient warm temperature days have
occurred.
When to Plant Grass Plugs in In Northern & Transition Zone Areas
In the northern USA and the transition zone planting of grass plugs should be in LATE spring / early summer when soil temperatures are 65-70+ degrees and all danger of freeze / frost is past. Soil
temperatures should reach this temperature when daytime temperatures are 80?+ F. This allows for the most growing temperature of WARM days before arrival of winter. You can use a soil temperature
gauge to determine if temperatures are warm enough to plant.
Planting Grass Plugs In Late Summer & Early Fall
Note that Seedland only sells grass plugs during the spring months of February - May. We do not recommend planting in the northern USA after this time frame. If you are planting warm season plugs in later months of summer
/ early fall, you should observe the requirement that at least 6-8 weeks
of growing temperatures needs to be available prior to first frost.
Preferably the temperatures should be above 70° F in the day.
Cool nights can slow growth (create winter dormancy in the grass) of
warm season grasses and thus result in less establishment of the
root system prior to winter's arrival. There is higher
risk of failure with fall planting, thus we recommend spring &
summer planting only.
Planting in the FALL is a high risk practice:
You may or may not have successful establishment of your
warm season plug. This will depend on many factors including
soil type, extent of winter temperatures (hard winter / snow cover /
etc.) along with other factors thus it is impossible to predict if
your late planted plugs will become established and return to life
in the spring.
